Luma wasn’t sure what it said exactly, but she did know that the small hand was only just past the number five.

“I knew it was too early!” Luma said. “We’re not supposed to be awake until six. Remember what Mom said?”

Timir did not listen. He let out a little roar, doing one last lap of her room before coming to a sharp stop. “Tummy hungry.”

Luma huffed. She knew there would be no going back to sleep now.

She slipped out of her room, down the hall, and into the kitchen, Timir following close behind.

Using the stool, she reached into the high cupboard to grab the box of her favorite cereal.

“Mine!” Timir said, bouncing up and down.

“What about your puppy food?”

“Yucky,” Timir said.

“But …” Luma shook her head. They’d had this same conversation again and again and it always ended in Timir eating her food.

Luma got two bowls and one spoon.

“Come on then, let’s watch TV.”
